Hôtel de France
Hotel 3-star in Beaune
Presentation
The Hôtel de France is easy to spot as soon as you step out of Beaune station: it stands right opposite, almost like a landmark to keep in mind even before you arrive. A five-minute walk is then enough to reach the historic center. It quickly becomes clear why so many visitors choose to come without a car: the train drops you off, the hotel welcomes you, and the town is explored on foot.
The building dates back to the 19th century. The 2018 renovation gave it a new tone, a mix of neo-retro and urban style that is a little surprising at first glance. Deep blue-greens dress the walls, contrasted by whites that let the light in. Nothing garish, rather a composed look that is reassuring.
Push open the door and you come upon Le Tast'Vin bar, which runs the full length of the ground floor like a room in its own right. The furnishings are comfortable, almost plush, and it is easy to linger there for a glass of regional wine before dinner. Virginie and Nicolas Di Serio have been running the place with their team for years, and the welcome they give guests often comes up in conversations with Beaune regulars.
Going upstairs, you discover the 22 rooms, divided into several categories. Some retain old wood and a fireplace, while others have been fully modernized, with newly renovated bathrooms. One drawback, though: a few standard rooms remain compact, around 13 m², true to the spirit of a town house rather than a recently standardized hotel. For those looking for more space, it is better to request a superior or family room when booking.
Another point to know before reserving: the building has no elevator, and access is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. Something to keep in mind if you are traveling with heavy luggage or limited mobility, though it does nothing to take away from the character of a place that remains faithful to its late-19th-century Burgundian house appearance.
At night, the soundproofing does the job: you sleep well despite the proximity of the station. The beds are comfortable, the bedding is well kept, and the establishment is entirely non-smoking.
In the morning, breakfast is served from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., every day of the week. The bread is fresh, the croissants still warm, the coffee strong and black. Nothing extraordinary on paper, but enough to keep you going until lunch after a walk through the vineyards.
In the evening, in the restaurant, Chef Stéphane Giboulot’s cuisine showcases Burgundian specialties. Regulars speak of simple but well-executed cooking, far from overly crowded menus. Families are welcome, with children’s menus and family rooms designed to accommodate groups.
Pets are welcome too, provided you notify reception in advance. A detail that matters for those traveling with their dog for a weekend in Burgundy.
If you arrive at the end of the day, take the time to stop at the bar before going up to your room. It is often there, over a couple of glasses of wine, that the team shares the best local addresses for the next day.
Summary of a few positive reviews read on the Web
- Warm welcome from the moment of arrival. The staff remain available at all hours, without ever seeming rushed.
- Room rather spacious and nicely decorated. Surprisingly quiet despite the station right opposite.
- Hearty breakfast, fresh bread every morning. Dinner at the restaurant was careful, well-executed Burgundian cuisine.
- Impossible to get lost when leaving the train; the hotel is right across from the station. Ten minutes’ walk to reach the historic center.
- Good value for money in Beaune. The comfort of the room has nothing to envy from more expensive addresses in the city center.
