Les Remparts Hotels and Historic Residences, in Beaune, is discovered around the corner of a cobbled lane in the historic center, just a few steps from the Hospices de Beaune. Its tower and glazed-tile roof announce the house even before you pass through the carriage gate. You enter, and the inner courtyard opens up all at once, calm, almost set apart from the noise of the city that is nevertheless so close.

The history of the house spans several lives. Elisée Epailly, the first auctioneer of the charity wine auction of the Hospices de Beaune, once ran his auction house here. His children, Claude and Elyane, turned it into a three-star hotel thirty years ago. Then their son Bruno took over the keys in 2020, with his wife Emmanuelle, to transform the 17th-century townhouse, adjoining the 15th-century ramparts, into a four-star boutique hotel. The tower remained. So did the glazed roof. The comfort, however, has changed century.

The rooms are named after the vineyards surrounding the town. Each has its own furnishings, air conditioning is individually controlled room by room, bathrobes await in the wardrobe, and soundproofing cuts out the sounds of the paved street below. Twenty-two rooms in all, divided between traditional doubles and suites. This limited number gives the whole place an almost home-like rhythm. It is best to book early, especially for the weekend of the Hospices wine auction in mid-November, when the entire town fills up.

At breakfast, local gingerbread comes up in several traveler reviews, as do eggs cooked to order. This meal is available at an extra charge and is not included in direct bookings. On the ground floor, a bar occupies a corner of the house, in the former auction room of Elisée Epailly, with possible terrace seating in the courtyard. There is no restaurant on site: for dinner, you go out. In Beaune, the walk to the wine bars and tables of the historic center, just a few meters from the carriage gate, is almost part of the stay.

The Basilica of Notre-Dame, the former Hôtel des Ducs de Bourgogne, the shopping streets, everything is within a few minutes on foot. Beaune train station is six hundred meters away, a real plus for anyone arriving by train from Dijon or Paris. The nearest airport, Dole-Jura, is still some sixty kilometers away: people come here by train or by car, and the hotel offers a paid shuttle for those who need it.

The reception desk remains open day and night, concierge services arrange bicycle or car rentals for trips out into the vineyards, and the underground public parking lot is just steps away. Be sure to ask for it when booking: you will then receive a card granting unlimited access, easier than looking for a space in the narrow streets of the center.

In the late afternoon, when the light skims the tower’s glazed tiles, the inner courtyard becomes the place to linger before going out to dinner. Ask for a courtyard-facing room rather than one facing the street: you will sleep even better.
