Château de Challanges

Hotel 4-star with pool in Beaune

Presentation

Château de Challanges appears at the end of a tree-lined avenue bordered by centuries-old trees, in a seven-hectare park just a few minutes from the center of Beaune. At the end of the drive, a wrought-iron gate opens onto a nineteenth-century building, bought in 2022 by Vanessa and Thomas Martin, both of whom came from the hospitality industry. You can feel their touch everywhere, in the choice of fabrics, in the vintage furniture, in the way each of the twenty-four rooms tells its own story.

On the ground floor of the château, the lounges retain their original woodwork. The suites, upstairs, embrace period furnishings, with imposing beds and bathrooms equipped with whirlpool baths and chromotherapy lighting. You sleep there as though in the room of a slightly too generous friend. These suites and the standard rooms in the main building are on the second floor, with no elevator. Something to keep in mind if you do not like carrying luggage up by hand, but it is also what gives them those high ceilings and volumes that you do not find in the outbuildings in the park.

Farther on, by the heated pool, the pavilions and the two round houses offer a much more contemporary decor. Private terraces, large wooden tables, two double beds for families. The contrast with the château is striking. Here, everything is designed for life outdoors: loungers around the pool, jacuzzi, massage on request.

In the morning, breakfast is served indoors, under a glass roof, or on the terrace overlooking the park. The buffet is more generous than refined, which suits perfectly after a night in such silence. The rest of the day revolves around the estate: bike rental to head into Beaune in about fifteen minutes, rides along the cycle paths between the vineyards, or booking a hot-air balloon flight over the Côte d’Or from the hotel’s excursion desk.

The center of Beaune and the Hospices are just under three kilometers away. It is an easy distance by bike, but still a long walk, especially on the way back after a late-afternoon tasting. Private parking is free and equipped with charging stations for electric cars.

In the evening, when the park empties out, the staff take the time to recommend a table on the terrace rather than indoors, with a cheese board and a glass of Crémant de Bourgogne.

Summary of a few positive reviews read on the Web

  • Very professional welcome from the moment we arrived; the person at reception gave us a list of restaurants and good places around Beaune, more useful than a tourist guide.
  • Copious and varied breakfast, several types of bread and homemade jams, we did not feel rushed while eating.
  • Family room in an old outbuilding on the estate, a little away from the main château, quiet and spacious enough for four.
  • The garden is truly beautiful; we enjoyed the pool in the late afternoon, with quiet service at that time, no one rushing us.
  • The evening staff advised us to sit on the terrace with a cheese board and a glass of wine, a simple and pleasant moment after visiting the cellars.
