L'Hôtel Belle Epoque is located a three-minute walk from the center of Beaune, between the Côte vineyards and the cobblestones leading to the Hospices. The façade says very little about what awaits behind the door: an old 18th-century merchant house, where the wine trade has left a few discreet traces in the stone.

You push open the porch and first come upon an Art Deco glass roof, stretched above the reception area. In the afternoon, the light falls in at an angle and gives the welcome area a quiet theatrical feel.

To get to the rooms, you have to take a broad staircase, the kind they no longer build. There is no elevator: travelers carrying heavy suitcases, or less comfortable on stairs, can ask for one of the two accessible rooms, located on the ground floor. On the first floor, the Louis-Philippe style dominates, with thick carpets and wall hangings. On the second, you move into an Empire decor, darker tones and discreet gilding. The 28 rooms are divided into four categories: standard, comfort, suite with lounge, or family room for five people.

The comfort comes quietly: air conditioning, satellite TV, wifi that works well even in the courtyard, a safe in the wardrobe. You can tell the house was designed for staying in, not just sleeping in.

On the ground floor, an inner courtyard provides a breathing space. A few chairs, a coffee table, the same light filtering through the glass roof. It is here that you have an aperitif at the end of the day, a glass of Burgundy wine in hand, or read a chapter before going out to dinner. The bar is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., with short menus, soft drinks, hot beverages, and a few champagnes.

In the morning, table service, eggs made to order, cheese, ham, pastries still warm. One point to know: breakfast is charged extra. The service remains attentive and the products fresh, which still makes quite a difference compared with a standard buffet at the same price.

The staff speaks several languages, which makes things easier for visitors coming from afar. Regular guests often mention the attention paid to small requests, a recommended restaurant in town, a walking route through the vineyards.

The parking lot in the courtyard has one space per room. Handy when you arrive late on a Sunday evening, after the Route des Grands Crus.

One last detail: breakfast ends exactly at 11 a.m. After a tasting that lasted a little longer than expected the night before, it is best not to linger too long in the shower.
