The Hôtel Le Foch takes its name from the boulevard on which it stands, right in the center of Beaune, a five-minute walk from the Hospices and their glazed tile roofs. Guests often arrive after crossing the town on foot, between wine cellar windows and pale stone façades, and push open a modest door that leads into a different tempo.

On the ground floor, the bar feels like a small museum. The shelves hold a few bottles from the Côte de Beaune, a selection of wines by the glass for those who prefer to taste before buying, and Lionel, a native of the city, is always happy to explain where each cuvée comes from. The bar closes around 9:30 p.m. There is no service until midnight here: you have your drink early in the evening, which, after a day of tastings in the cellars, suits the mood rather well.

The patio at the back serves as a living room all year round. You settle there with a book in the afternoon, have your coffee there in the morning when the sun reaches the cobblestones early, and watch the other guests go by after a walk through the vineyards of the Côte.

Going upstairs, there is no elevator: a fairly steep staircase serves the rooms above, a vestige of the original house that you do not modernize without losing its character. If your luggage is heavy or you prefer everything on one level, just mention it when booking; a ground-floor room is often available.

The rooms, about ten in all, have all been renovated in recent years: shower, toilet, television. The decor remains understated, almost family-like, far from boutique-hotel codes, with a bed, a functional bathroom, and sometimes parquet flooring or carpeting that shows its age without anything giving way. In winter, some rooms keep a slight chill in the morning; an extra blanket is easily requested at reception.

Breakfast often comes up in conversations among guests at the counter: simple, generous, and served in the patio as soon as the weather allows.

Beaune itself does the rest. The Hospices and their glazed-tile roofs can be visited in a few minutes on foot, as can the Patriarche cellars and the Burgundy wine museum, as well as the ramparts that still encircle the old town. Cycling enthusiasts will find several marked routes to the Côte vineyards, and those looking to relax a little can head to the swimming pool or a river swim, a few kilometers away.

One last detail: stop by the bar before 9:30 p.m.; the house’s last round ends exactly at that time, and Lionel always knows a bottle you won’t find anywhere else in town.
