B&B Hotel Beaune Sud 1 Palais des Congrès does not play the Burgundy charm card from the moment you arrive. Its beige facade, set along the roadside facing the Palais des Congrès, makes a rather practical statement: this is a place to sleep quickly and well, before or after a trade show, an auction, or simply to break up a journey between Paris and Lyon. The A6 motorway is two minutes away, and Beaune SNCF train station is not much farther.

The Palais des Congrès, indeed, is three hundred meters away. You can get there on foot by crossing the parking lot, without having to drag luggage over cobblestones. The historic center and the Hospices, on the other hand, require a little more patience: allow a good quarter of an hour on foot, or better yet, take the car, parked free of charge on-site for the entire stay. That is the price of a quiet location, away from the bustle of the tourist lanes in the middle of wine auction season.

From morning on, head to the breakfast room. The all-you-can-eat buffet, served as an extra at around eight euros fifty, focuses on products made in France. A toast bar that is a bit surprising, well-stocked dairy products, a hot section for warm pastries, fruit juices to make up for the previous day’s drive. Children up to ten years old have their own rate, which changes everything for families on the move.

Up on the upper floors, the fifty-two air-conditioned rooms embrace useful simplicity. A well-supportive mattress, a duvet and pillows designed by a French bedding specialist, a desk with free, unlimited wifi, a flat-screen TV with Canal+ and TNT to unwind between meetings. The blackout curtains do their job, as does the private bathroom. A few rooms are fitted out for guests with reduced mobility, and a microwave is available for reheating a meal brought in from outside. Some guests have nevertheless reported, in recent months, a noticeable air-conditioning or technical-system noise in the rooms closest to the equipment. Something to mention at reception on arrival, to request a room farther away if you are a light sleeper.

Reception, for its part, is not open continuously. A machine takes over outside the usual hours (roughly 6:30-11:00 a.m. and 5:00-9:00 p.m.), with an access code sent before arrival. Convenient for late returns after a journey that runs long, a little less so for those who like to be welcomed in person at any hour.

The parking lot, meanwhile, is enclosed and free, with an electric charging point available. Pets are accepted for a fee of six euros per night, with a leash required in common areas.

One last note for the road: if your stop in Beaune falls on an evening of Hospices wine auction, book early. Prices rise everywhere in town that weekend, and the hotel is no exception.
